Traveling Through a Network Reflection Essay

When you’re having network issues, you can use the ping and traceroute commands on your command prompt for troubleshooting. The ping command tests how reachable a device is on a specific network. The traceroute command shows the path a data packet takes while traveling from your computer to a remote device, including the time taken to do that. 

Packets are small data units that your computer sends over a network, and these units carry information such as the source, the destination, and the actual data. The ping command sends multiple packets to a device or network and measures the time it takes to get a response using round-trip time (RTT). A shorter RTT shows a quicker response time while a longer RTT usually indicates network problems. The traceroute command is more complex; it sends a series of data packets to the destination and shows the paths taken. It shows the devices and networks (hops) where your data passes through and places where there may be potential network issues. It also shows the time taken for each hop.

Comparing The Ping And Traceroute Results From The Different Websites

I used ping and traceroute commands on three websites: www. google.com, www.japan.go.jp, and www.pm.gov.au. The RTTs for these websites were 10ms, 58ms, and 105ms respectivelyThat shows that closer websites have lower RTTs, and the farther the website location, the higher the RTT. The traceroute results for the three websites were also different, indicating the different paths and different times taken by data packets to reach these destinations. While the geographical location of a network or device may affect the latency, other factors like traffic and infrastructure quality also play a huge role.

Using The Ping And Traceroute Commands To Troubleshoot Internet Connection Problems

When having internet connection issues, you can use the ping and traceroute commands for troubleshooting. If you run the ping command and it shows high RTTs or no response at allyou're having connectivity issues between you and the destination. You may have a faulty router or your internet connection itself may be having issues. Traceroute results with many hops and high RTTs may also indicate internet connection problems that need investigation.

Time Out Or Error Response from Ping and Traceroute Commands

There are several reasons why a ping request or traceroute command may respond with an error or time-out. One, if the destination network or device is offline, it may time out during a ping request because it's unreachable. Two, some networks are configured to block ICMP packets for security reasons. These firewalls may make ping and traceroute commands time out and produce error responses. Other reasons are increased network traffic, invalid destination addresses, and router malfunctions.
